"Oh, that's the spot, Vice!"
Clients are frequently astonished that I can find, just by feeling, the painful area. Trigger points are extremely sensitive spots in muscle bands that trigger painful responses and are identified by heightened pain in the client and an apparent hardness to the therapist. Trigger points are not just tender nodules, but they affect the surrounding muscle and tissues. A type of soft tissue therapy, trigger point therapy, first originated by Dr. Janet Travell who treated President John F. Kennedy for his back pain, is based on the theory that pain in one part of the body can in fact be brought about by an injury or dysfunction somewhere else. Trigger points are spots of tenderness in a muscle. Trigger point therapy incorporates applied pressure to these sore, tender areas in order to alleviate their pain and dysfunction as well as pain in other parts of the body. Theoretically, active trigger points cause muscle pain which passes pain and tenderness to other parts of the body when pressed. Latent trigger points are those that don't have pain unless pressed, but they are presumed to bring about joint stiffness and reduced ranges of motion as we age. At Hybrid Health Performance, we utilize a variety of tools to release trigger points and loosen up the surrounding muscles. We perform highly detailed soft tissue therapy to the problematic and compensatory area of the body to get the results that we do.
