Rib Pain

​Rib pain can be sharp, stabbing, or achy — and it often makes breathing, twisting, or even sleeping uncomfortable. Many people describe it as a “pinch,” a “catch,” or a deep ache that wraps around the side of the body. Because the ribs move with every breath, rib pain can feel constant and frustrating.

At Hybrid Health, we help you understand why rib pain happens and use a multi‑modal Muscle Therapy approach to restore mobility, reduce inflammation, and calm irritated tissues around the ribs, spine, and diaphragm.

Why Rib Pain Happens
Your ribcage is designed to move — expanding and contracting with every breath, rotating with your spine, and stabilizing your upper body. Each rib connects to the spine in the back and the sternum or cartilage in the front, creating a flexible but complex system.

When one rib becomes restricted or irritated, the surrounding muscles tighten to protect it. This leads to a cycle of tension, inflammation, and pain that can make even simple movements uncomfortable.

Common Causes of Rib Pain
  • Rib joint restriction (costovertebral or costotransverse joints)
  • Muscle tension in the intercostals, lats, serratus, or obliques
  • Poor posture or prolonged sitting
  • Twisting or reaching injuries
  • Overuse from lifting or sports
  • Stress‑related shallow breathing
  • Thoracic spine stiffness
  • Old injuries that never fully healed
Once restriction sets in, the body responds with:
  1. Muscle guarding
  2. Inflammation
  3. Reduced mobility
  4. Pain with breathing or rotation
  5. Compensation in the neck, shoulders, or low back

This is why rib pain often shows up with upper‑back tightness, shoulder discomfort, or difficulty taking a full breath.


Common Symptoms of Rib Pain
  • Sharp pain with twisting or bending
  • Pain that wraps around the side of the body
  • Discomfort with deep breaths
  • A “catching” or “pinching” sensation
  • Tenderness between or along the ribs
  • Pain when lying on one side
  • Stiffness in the upper or mid‑back
  • Pain that mimics heartburn or chest tightness (but is muscular in origin)

If rib pain is accompanied by shortness of breath, fever, or internal symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended — but most rib pain is mechanical, muscular, and highly treatable.


How Hybrid Health Treats Rib Pain
Our signature 30‑minute Muscle Therapy session blends 4–8 evidence‑based modalities to reduce tension, restore mobility, and calm irritated tissues around the ribs and thoracic spine.

Every session is customized, but may include:
1. Localized Vibration Therapy
Reduces muscle guarding in the intercostals, serratus, lats, and upper‑back muscles.
2. Manual Therapy
Hands‑on work to release tight tissues, improve rib and thoracic mobility, and restore natural breathing mechanics.
3. Percussion Therapy

4. Cupping or Decompression
Lifts and separates stuck tissues between the ribs, improving mobility and reducing pain.

6. Radial Shockwave Therapy
Highly effective for chronic rib pain, intercostal irritation, or long‑standing thoracic stiffness.
